Algae are a very important part of the recycling of nutrients produced in freshwater aquatic ecosystems, such as lakes and irrigation ponds. Normally, algae maintain a natural dynamic balance with the amount of nutrients that enters into the ecosystem. When there is an excess in the supply of nutrients (eutrophication of the ecosystem), a loss of that equilibrium takes place, triggering episodes of massive proliferation of algae (algal blooms). This situation is favored by high temperatures.
As a consequence, a loss of water quality occurs: turbidity increases, oxygen decreases, anaerobic processes producing malodorous gases are favored, and there is an accumulation of reduced substances (sulfides, ammonium, Fe, Mg…). Normally, actions of anthropogenic origin contribute in an important way to increase the levels of nutrients in the water: fertilizers, detergents, wastewater…
An ultrasonic treatment with the DUMO Algacleaner equipment can help to restore the balance between nutrients and algal biomass, through the elimination of excess algae. This reduces the costs of water treatment and the maintenance of hydraulic infrastructures.
The most widely used method to solve the problem of algae is the application of algaecides. The most frequently used chemical anti-algae is copper sulphate (Cu SO4). This treatment is quite effective against algae, but it is ephemeral and also affects other forms of life, such as fish.
In addition, it leaves a residue of heavy metals that can produce damages by bioaccumulation or bio-magnification in other organisms, thus contributing to the increase of a secondary contamination.
The effect of this type of antialgae is temporary, which requires the continuous addition of this chemical so that, in the long term, the chemical treatment is quite costly from an economic and environmental point of view.
DUMO is effective against different types of algae: chlorophytes (green algae), cyanophytes (blue-green algae), chrysophytes (golden algae), diatoms, dinoflagellates and euglenophytes.
It is not effective against macrophytes (water lentil, potamogeton, water hyacinth, etc…) as these are aquatic plants with physiological characteristics different from algae.
